Welcome to Zhejiang University Eye Hospital
The roots of the Dept. of Ophthalmology date back to 1869 when the predecessor of Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was an Opium Refuge established by British Church Missionary Society. In 1871, it was expanded into Hospital of Universal Benevolence where the first hospital President Dr. David Duncan Main performed cataract surgeries for leprosy patients. After experiencing hundreds of years development, the Dept. of Ophthalmology of Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was developed into Eye Center in 1996 and upgraded into Zhejiang University Eye Hospital in 2021.
The Eye Center of Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine as well as the new Zhejiang University Eye Hospital is a modern eye hospital integrating medical treatment, education and research recruited 550 staffs including 120 faculties, covering an area of 50,000 m2 which contains 150 clinic rooms, 28 operation rooms, 200 inpatients beds and a 4,500 m2 specialized ophthalmic laboratory. The new Zhejiang University Eye Hospital consists of ten subspecialties including cataract, retina, glaucoma, cornea and ocular surface disease, refractive surgery, oculoplastic and orbital disease, strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis and optometry. The annual outpatient visits arrive to 900,000 and the annual surgeries including laser procedures reach over 90,000. In the past five years, the Eye Center was successively ranked top 4 among all the Chinese ophthalmology departments and institutes.
